This is all you
need to get your RIVA installed and working under Win95. No
frills.
Follow these
instructions and it will work. Then feel free to mess
about with it.
This info was
obtained from accross the Web, and through trial and error. The
whole installation bit is a mostly a heavily edited version of Paul Elliott's instructions. The OpenGL32 stuff is based on this. The
Quake and Quake II stuff was put together by me from souces such
as PlanetQuake
and RivaZone.
note: if you have
trouble downloading any of the files linked from here, then try
using an ftp search engine to find them. (right-click link for file info) Post
me with relevant info.
If you are upgrading to a
Riva, then before removing your old card, change the
display adapter to Standard VGA (right-click-desktop/settings/advanced/change...)
Power-down your PC and fit
your Riva.
1.1 BIOS
Usually you press the delete
key during boot-up, during / just after the ram test, to
enter the BIOS setup.
Turn off / disable any VIDEO
"chaching" or "shadowing".
Assign / enable an IRQ to the
display adapter.
1.2 OS
Check your operating system
version (my-computer-icon/right-click/properties/general-tab):
If you are using
"95b" or "95c", then fine, proceed to
1.3
If you are running
"95a" (shown as just "95" if I
remember correctly) then you will need to install some
extra stuff:
Download the OpenGL update and run it in a
temporary directory.
Grab the OPENGL32.DLL
and GLU32.DLL and stick them in your
"..\windows\system\" directory.
(Win98?... you tell me !
Should be similar to 95c I suppose)
1.3 USB
Support
This file will only work on
"95b" onwards: USBSupp.exe [942K] Search
(if you have an AGP card and "95a", I suggest
getting a newer OS "somewhere" - AGP will never
function correctly otherwise)
1.4
Chipset
An OS update is needed for
HX, VX, TX FX and LX chipsets: setupex.exe [564K] Search
REBOOT (the chipset update
screws some drivers until reboot)
1.5 VGA
Set the display adapter to
Standard VGA (right-click-desktop/settings/advanced/change...).
REBOOT
1.6
Manufacturer's Drivers (the ones you got with the card)
Install as per instructions
or right-click-desktop/settings/advanced/change.../have-disk
REBOOT.
1.7 VGA
Set the display adapter to
Standard VGA (again...) and REBOOT.
1.8 nVIDIA
Drivers
DOWNLOAD the latest (Release
2) from nVIDIA (AGP [1001K], PCI [991K]) then: right-click-desktop/settings/advanced/change.../have-disk
1.9
DIRECTX
Install DirectX5.n (cover
disc, game CD, or download [3.5M]).
1.10
...and Finaly
Make damned sure
your desktop colour depth is 16bit. (openGL stuff won't
work for sh;t otherwise)
Oh, and if or when
new drivers come out, go back to Standard VGA and reboot
before installing them, OK?
Get this [970K] to give yourself transparent water.
(the "r_wateralpha 0.6" command from the above
script file is essential) Extract to your
"..\quake\id1" directory and run INSTALL.BAT
All I use is a minimalist script file to set the gamma, OpenGL
settings and controls. Slap the file into
"..\quake2\baseq2".
3.1
Desktop Colour Depth
"Make damned
sure your desktop colour depth is 16bit." Otherwise
you'll get the very helpful "GL_INIT failed"
message when you try to set the video mode to Default
OpenGL.
3.2 Change
Q2 Video Mode
In the game menu, "set
the video mode to Default OpenGL."
If you get a rogue windows
cursor appearing in TA, then try the following registry
edit (start/run/regedit):
go to
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\"
if it doesn't exist, add a new key: "Display", and
in there,
add a new DWORD, with ValueData 0: "CursorCache"
